About Stowhouse Farm Cottages
Stowhouse Farm is a small family run livestock farm, surrounded by woodland, standing at 1000 feet overlooking the valleys around Durham City in beautiful County Durham.
The main farmhouse was built in 1875 by Sir Henry Augustus Clavering, but the site has been built on as far back as the fifteenth century.
Stowhouse Farm is reputed to get its name from when Bonny Prince Charlie 'stowed' away on his flight north to Scotland after a defeat in battle by King James.
Between 1875 and 1948 the farm has been in the ownership of no fewer than 6 knights of the realm, namely Sir Charles Furness, Sir Fortescue Horner, Sir John Henry Berwick, Baron Gainford of Headlam and Sir William Grey.
The present owners Joan and Shane Gould recently bought Stowhouse Farm Cottages from Peter and Rosie Swinburn and are looking forward to meeting all our new guests.
