Environmental Policy

Stowhouse Farm Cottages believe that we have a responsibility to care for and protect the environment in which we operate. We are fully committed to improving environmental performance across all of our activities, and will encourage our Guests and members of the wider community to join us in this effort.

  • We develop our business in as sustainable manner as possible
  • We monitor and manage our energy use
  • Composting of all green and cooked food waste. Kitchen caddies are supplied in all cottages, in which we encourage guests to dispose of all their food waste including meat and cooked foods. Compost bins are used by all at the farm
  • Recycling of glass, plastic, cardboard, paper and cans. Guests are encouraged to use the recycling and compost bins provided on site
  • Collect and use rainwater in our gardens
  • Insulation of all our loft spaces
  • Use energy saving light bulbs throughout our properties
  • We use environmentally friendly cleaning products
  • We buy ethically using fresh, local and Fair trade products
  • We encourage wildlife and biodiversity
  • Provide free bike storage and encourage our guests to bring their own bikes or hire locally
  • Use our website and emails to promote our cottages whenever possible

We have also taken the following actions to improve wildlife at Stowhouse Farm, helping towards sustainability and our wider environmental impact.

  • We are a member of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme
  • Encourage wild birds by providing all year round feeding stations and erecting bird nesting boxes
  • Plants attractive to insects have been planted in our gardens
  • Woodpiles created and leaving dead/fallen trees and leaf piles to encourage insects
  • Maintaining hedgerows and dry stone walls

We can work together to make less impact on our surroundings; we ask our guests to do the following:

  • Use the recycling facilities
  • Please help conserve water by not flushing toilets unnecessarily, please also wait until you have a full load before washing your clothes. Use a 30 degree or a half load washing cycle
  • Don't turn up the heating and open windows - this is really wasteful; when you go out please turn down heating, turn off all lights and close all windows
  • Please turn off all lights when you go out and only keep essential lights on at night
  • Use only the ecological cleaning products we supply
  • Buy local food and services whilst you are here to help the local community that you came to visit
  • Buy products with less packaging to dispose of
  • Leave no litter and respect the Country Code. Copies in the cottage
  • Sadly we have little public transport, however we have lovely walks using the footpaths locally, so why not leave the car behind for a day, take a picnic and explore the immediate, beautiful countryside
